Last week some of New York’s most enthusiastic members of the startup scene came together in the colorful Poppin showroom to connect with the rich mix of founders, innovators, educators and investors that make up the local Startup Grind community. In the fun exchange of knowledge, all attendees were eager to both to hear and to share the lessons they’re learning while on the road to building great companies. Participants connected over light refreshments as the room was buzzing with energy. It was a pleasure to listen to a casual fireside chat with the speaker of the month, Tarek Pertew. Guests packed into the inviting showroom to hear Tarek Pertew, the co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of Uncubed. Going on its fourth year of operation in March, Uncubed, is a platform that helps people succeed in digital careers. The company is headquartered in New York City’s Chinatown. The concept for Uncubed was born out of an email chain gone awry when a friend of the two founders accidentally sent to a whole group of business owners when he clicked “reply all.” With a stroke of genius and maybe a bit of wild ambition, knowing that he and his co-founder could organize events better than the competition while also bringing people together in a meaningful way. Pertew and his co-founder came together to throw and event based on this domain expertise and formed Uncubed. With particular perspective in hiring needs and talent acquisition methods, Tarek has been featured as an expert in startups and employment in some publications, including the NY Times, Forbes, CNN, CBS, About.com and a jobs expert for Newsday. Before Tarek’s current ventures, he co-founded a two companies in the hiring and HR industry: Referio, a crowd-sourcing referral hiring platform and MyWorkster a platform that connected alumni with students, which ultimately evolved into a national job fair business.
