Mobile World Congress 2016 revealed a shift in how consumers produce media

As always, Mobile World Congress 2016 brings exciting news to the world of electronics. This round-up explores a shift in how we capture content in 2016, as the products showcased at MWC are improving, changing and expanding upon how we create and consume our growing coffers of content.

Cameras

LG Rolling Bot — The LG Rolling Bot is a device that accompanies LG’s new smartphone. It rolls like a ball while capturing images and videos with its embedded camera. With a camera connectable via Wi-Fi, users can capture untold content or even remotely monitor the interior of their homes with the LG G5 via live streaming.

LG 360 CAM — The two-sided portable consists of two cameras that can be controlled via your phone and a camera lens that can be mirror-viewed on the phone too as it is easily connected to the LG G5.

The LG 360 CAM provides 2K video and surround channel recording on three microphones to help users effortlessly create high-quality 360-degree videos. Through a partnership with Google, images taken with the 360 CAM can be uploaded to Google Street View and YouTube360, adding the functionality of being able to share work with others. The images created by the camera will also be available to view on the LG 360 VR or other smartphones and devices that are 360-degree capable.

Samsung 360 Gear — This cam’s front and rear lenses each capture 180 degrees horizontally and vertically, which creates a seamless and complete 360-degree field of view. This product nicely meshes with the new suite of VR tools. It makes it easy for consumers to create their own VR videos. this device can take record spherical video and images for playback in VR or in 2D via an Android app. t stitches the video as well unlocking and creating a way to drive the adoption of VR content.

Headsets

LG 360 VR Goggles — The LG 360 VR is a VR goggle that can be connected with the G5 phone via a cable and works exclusively with the G5 to simulate a 130-inch TV viewed from two meters away.

It has a stylish design that is foldable so that users can easily carry and watch VR content anytime, anywhere. The device is compatible with 360-degree images and videos captured with LG 360 CAM as well as all Google Cardboard content.

HTC VIVE — Competitors to Oculus will certainly begin to rush in to this space as it expands at light speed. HTC announced that its consumer version of the HTC VIVE is coming soon. The team is reportedly working with developers to create content that fits multiple industry sectors, including entertainment, healthcare, design, education, retail and automotive.

Mobile Devices

The rising availability of this content demands that more phones be able display immersive content. The following devices got updates and are more ergonomic, and feature higher resolutions screens, better cameras, better autofocus, and low light capture.

5G In More Devices — Contenders like Intel are improving their technologies to stay caught up with the times and are repositioning themselves as the grid will increasingly need to accommodate high traffic, large files and VR content that hogs consumer bandwidth. Intel is working to better create processors so that more devices can get connected to the 5G network so as to not disrupt our newfound content consumption.

At MCW, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled dynamic streaming technology — which compresses 360-degree video on the fly, reducing the amount of required bandwidth by four times and increasing the quality by a factor of four. Thus, the 360 streaming of video in VR will look clearer and play faster.

Additionally, he says more than 200 games are now available in the Oculus store.
