At a drone film festival, winning cinema-makers are awarded a custom-made drone trophy
A festival award built for aerial machinists by aerial machinists
On March 5, GE is presenting the second annual NYC Drone Film Festival. The festival is the world’s first event exclusively dedicated to celebrating the art of drone cinematography. It offers an international platform for filmmakers from every corner of the globe to exhibit their work in front of industry professionals and the drone cinema fan community.
During the film festival, GE will award the winner with a custom-made drone, engineered with bells and whistles sure to delight even the most advanced drone enthusiast.
This year’s best-in-show winner will take home a one-of-a-kind platform drone flexible enough for industrial robotics or aerial cinematography, and customized and built by GE’s top roboticists and engineers at the company’s Global Research Center.
The machine combines industrial technologies with a sleek design and flexibility. Whereas standard commercial drones operate at a five-pound payload, this drone will be able to hold up to eight pounds of camera gear, allowing filmmakers to use higher-quality (and thus heavier) equipment in projects so as to capture the best picture quality imaginable.
There are a lot of new applications for airborne, and sea-and-land-based robots across industries, including aerial cinematography. For example, GE uses drone technology and service robotics for industrial applications like safety management and inspection. The company is celebrating the ever-expanding use of drones in cinematography and entertainment while also showcasing how drones are digitizing industrial business sectors.
This award is built specifically for the best filmmakers who use drone in their work. It is not a trophy meant to sit on the mantle piece, but rather a utilitarian award to be used to continue to create art. No tiny shining statue for winning drone filmmakers: instead a flying, functional trophy ready to nab auteurs more awards.
